What is intermittent fasting? There’s a negative stigmas associated with not eating that is strong. A lot of that stigma is based around outdated science. Let’s see how intermittent fasting works.

How it Works

Intermittent fasting does not specify which foods to eat, but rather when to eat them. It is described more as an eating pattern than a diet. Different styles of fasting require that you fast for longer or shorter amounts of time.

Health Benefits

Some of the health benefits seem to be easier weight loss, higher growth hormone levels and cell rejuvenation, increased immune function, longer life span and improves insulin sensitivity. Using intermittent fasting and eating unhealthily daily isnt going to help, but adding this to your healthy diet will help.

Martin Berkhan’s Lean Gain Model

It is going for periods of time without consuming any calories. There are two main ways. The first is the 16/8 method. You do not eat for sixteen hours in a day, then eat during the eight. Most commonly, people do this by skipping breakfast, then eating three large meals during their eight hours, usually around noon, four o’clock and eight o’ clock. This is referred to as the Martin Berkhan’s Lean Gain Model.

Brad Pilon Method

This method was popularized by Brad Pilon and involves no eating for 24 hours twice a week. The most common way to do this is to stop eating at 5 pm and not eat your next meal until 5pm the next day. How can you start? Go ahead and try a 24 hour fast. Consume no calories, and only have water or black coffee. When most people try this, they find it is not as hard as it seems. Once the initial hunger subsides, most people are fine.

The 5:2 Method

The 5:2 Method is a pattern of eating where you eat normally for five days out of the week, and then restrict calories for the other two days. For women, the calorie intake on those days is typically 500 calories and 600 for men. Many people use this as a lifestyle rather than something they implement from time to time.

Intermittent fasting is not for everyone, but many people find success with it. If you are interested, try one of the above methods as they are the most consistently successful.
